Easy Homemade Popcorn
Here’s another really easy activity to do with the family! In fact, it’s so easy that I almost feel bad making a post about it. If you’ve ever looked at the stats of microwave popcorn, you would quickly change your mind about wanting to eat it during movie night. If you’ve never Googled it before, check it out. This way of making popcorn is fun, easy, and much more healthy for you.
- Get out your ingredients: canola or vegetable oil, yellow or white popcorn kernels, a tall pot
2. Place about 3 tablespoons of oil in the bottom of the pan. If you want a complete pan of popcorn then place kernels to just cover the bottom of the pan. I know it looks small. Trust me on this. More kernels than you’re seeing here and it will be popping all over your stove. If you want half a pan of popcorn cover half the bottom with kernels. If you’re decreasing the kernel amount then you can also decrease the oil amount.
3. You must have the lid on the pan. Turn up to medium high/high heat.
4. This part is important! As your oil heats up, you have to continue to mix around the kernels in the pan. Give it about a minute and you’ll start seeing the kernels pop into popcorn. Keep gently moving the pan until you reach the desired amount of popcorn you would like popped. The entire process shouldn’t take more than 4-5 minutes. Here my expert model is holding the lid for safety.
5. Add your toppings! My favorite is just to melt butter in a little dish, pour it over, and add some sea salt. Here are some additional topping ideas:
garlic salt
tabasco sauce
dry ranch powder
pepper
m&m’s
melted caramel
italian seasoning
lemon pepper
honey
olive oil
**I like to pour half the popcorn into a bowl, add the seasonings, then pour the other half on top. It makes it easier to mix together without your popcorn spilling out the top of the bowl.
Traditional Homemade Popcorn
Equipment
- pot with lid
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp canola or vegetable oil
- 1/2 c yellow or white popcorn kernels
- toppings of your choice
Instructions
- Put 3 tablespoons of oil in the bottom of your pot. Make sure it's a 2 or 3 quart pot with a handle and lid.
- Add the kernels. For a full pan of popcorn the bottom of the pot should be just about covered. If you want less popcorn decrease the kernels. 1/2 the bottom covered = 1/2 a pan of popped corn
- Turn the stove on medium high-high and place the lid on the pot.
- Slowly move the pot around the heat. After about a minute you should start seeing kernels popping. Continue to move the pot around to prevent burning until you hear no more pops or you've reached the desired amount to be popped.
- Remove from heat, pour into bowl, and add in any toppings you prefer.
