How to get gorilla glue and tacky things off skin

Ok everyone. This was an extremely impromptu post. Part of the reason I started this blog is that Jeremy and I do a lot of things that others can learn from, and we typically come up with odd ways to solve them. This is one of those moments. Notice how the top picture says bonds to everything? They aren’t kidding.

I am in the middle of a project coming to you later. It required a lot of Gorilla Glue. In my excitement to get it finished, I didn’t take the necessary precautions of using that much glue. I then thought I should wash it off the paintbrush. Guess what? Horrible idea! It stuck to me everywhere. It was one of those…..the more you to try to fix it the worse it got. Pretty much a Chinese finger trap nightmare.

At this point, I’m stuck with a layer of glue all over my hands, front and back. For those of you that have worked with this type of glue, you know that it doesn’t just rub off when it dries. Also, everything sticks to your hands until it dries, which can take a few hours. Things that stick include your cell phone, your dog’s fur, your fork to eat lunch….you get the picture. I was in a pickle.

My bad judgment turns into your learning experience so you don’t repeat my mistakes. I should preface this with if you haven’t done your project yet, wear gloves! Also use a disposable paintbrush instead of one you want to try to wash and keep nice. In case you’re like me and are in a bind, here’s how to fix it!

  1. This is one thing that wine won’t fix. Why? The glass is stuck to your hand permanently from the glue. To some people this might actually be a bonus. This is now your judgment call.
  2. Do NOT use anything like gasoline. It strips your hands of the natural oils and will actually make the glue stick more.
  3. Get a rag and awkwardly rub it vigorously to try to get the glue to ball up as much as possible.
  4. Find something with an exfoliate that you can use a lot of. I used EPSOM SALT. Yet again another use for my favorite bathroom accessory.
  5. Use the bathtub instead of your sink because this kind of makes a mess. Turn the water to COLD. This will help the glue harden to get off your skin easier. Warm water keeps it in liquid form and you will have a never ending battle.
  6. Sprinkle the Epsom salt in your hands and rub….and rub and rub and rub. Keep rubbing. You get the point. Don’t forget to sprinkle it on the top of your hands, especially around your fingernail area. Wash with the water and repeat. Continue until your hands are no longer sticky.
  7. Rub again with your rag. Repeat the process with any parts that are still sticky. The bonus to this process is your hands will be VERY exfoliated and extremely soft. I suggest putting some lotion on after for a mini spa day that you weren’t expecting.
  8. If you have any major problem spots, put a little olive oil or other skin safe oil on your hands first. It will help the glue to bead up and allow the exfoliate to get underneath it. Without oil, the glue will stick more to your skin.

Here is my process in picture form.

1. Use a rag to try to rub off any of the excess glue
2. Sprinkle your hands with Epsom salt or some kind of exfoliate. Rub vigorously
TIp: I also used this because it had oils in it that helped pull the glue off
3. Wash your hands with cold water only. Repeat the process as many times as needed until glue is gone.

Learn from my mistake! I hope this helps. Happy crafting!
